Hollow Point, Goodbye Celebration, Same as Sunday, Yarz Revenge

This past Friday, a friend and I drove to Franklin to visit Club LOGOS and see a show. The scene in Franklin is pretty detached from the Broad Ripple area, so I had no idea what these bands would be like, especially since I had only been to LOGOS once before.

A band called Hollow Point started off the show and the first thing I noticed was that they all seemed to be wearing a uniform — jeans, a collared black shirt and a red or white tie. The majority of the audience was dressed the same way. They announced that they were going to play some covers and followed that announcement with Blink 182 and then Green Day — two bands I never really liked, but the rest of the audience seemed to enjoy them.

The next band was Goodbye Celebration, a Canadian band who was four days into a two-month tour. I didn’t notice much movement in the audience, but the peak was a few guys in the back who seemed to be doing ballet moves until the middle of the next band’s set, Same As Sunday.

In between sets, an 11-year-old was trying to give me fashion advice — my shoes are apparently unbearable — then Yarz Revenge came on, something that could better be described as an improv act than a band. The band was two people: a drummer and a guitarist/singer, who were possibly brothers. Earlier, the guitarist had been trying to explain to me that they didn’t have any songs, they just made them up, and I couldn’t figure out what he meant at first. It finally made sense when they got on stage. Throughout the whole show, they had been asking people to put suggestions of song titles into a bucket; they then played almost an entire set made up from those suggestions. He would randomly pick out a piece of paper and although he occasionally threw some out, he would read the “song title” then make up a song, the subjects varying from blowjobs to monkeys to the Mighty Ducks.

As a band, they were OK — a bassist could be helpful — but as a strange sort of interactive comedy, they were great. Afterwards, the guitarist jokingly asked me to trash them in my review, but I can’t: Yarz Revenge was my favorite of the night.
