Visual art

Last November, 10 Indiana artists were selected as finalists in the city’s first Great Ideas competition. In this case, the great ideas have to do with public works of art. Since November, the finalists — Matthew Davey, Ryan Gothrup, Susan Watt Grade, Patrick Craig Manning, Jamie Pawlus, Team Records Municipal Workshop, Timothy Gray and Magdalena Segovia, Sean Derry and Tom Torluemke — have been conducting community research in support of their ideas. Now those ideas are ready to be unveiled and presented for public scrutiny.

Wednesday, Jan. 19, the public is invited to inspect the models, working drawings and concepts being proposed for the competition at the Artsgarden in Circle Centre Mall. From 6-7:30 p.m., the public will have a chance to check out the artists’ ideas and make comments. In February, one or more of the finalists will be commissioned to fabricate their projects. The final projects will be installed beginning this spring. The total budget for the Great Ideas competition is $105,000, which includes an allocation from the Indianapolis Cultural Development Commission as well as gifts from the Efroymson Fund of the Central Indiana Community Foundation and Starbucks Coffee. The 10 artists were chosen by the Public Art Selection Committee, which consists of James May, Jennifer Complo McNutt, Mario A. Mirelez, Betty J. Scarpino, Jon-Charles Smith and William E. Taylor.

I can affirm that the exhibition offers much to savor, in addition to a gift shop the likes of which you’ve never tasted. It offers history and lore...
