Planned Parenthood event
by Editors Nov 10, 2004

Planned Parenthood of Indiana vows to continue its mission to protect, provide and promote reproductive health for Hoosiers, despite the overwhelming victories of pro-choice opponents nationally and locally.

“We’ve been here, and we’ve been a non-partisan organization, since 1932,” Betty Cockrum, president and CEO, said in a statement released Thursday. “We have outlasted administrations Democratic and Republican, friendly and unfriendly to our mission. Why? Because our services are needed by the people of Indiana.”

Gov.-elect Mitch Daniels ran on a platform that included a reduction in the number of abortions in the state of Indiana, an agenda that will most likely see strong support from both chambers of the General Assembly that are now controlled by Republicans.

Pro-choice advocates plan to greet legislators on Nov. 16 for what is known as Organization Day, when members of the Indiana General Assembly meet to set the stage for the legislative session that begins in January.

Planned Parenthood’s Organization Day Visibility Campaign will be held at the Statehouse from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. and is intended to inform legislators on priority issues of family planning, funding, emergency contraceptives and sex education.

Those interested in showing support for reproductive health by participating in the campaign are asked to contact Planned Parenthood of Indiana at 1-800-421-3731, ext. 1133 or e-mail robin.olds@ppin.org.
