Power of story

Scheherazade’s “magic of imagination” saves her life and restores faith in marriage to a disillusioned sultan. Dance Kaleidoscope’s David Hochoy’s modern setting to Rimsky-Korsakov’s late 19th century composition brings Arabian Nights stories to life “through a child’s eyes.” Hochoy talks of his own childhood fascination with the music, “having first heard it in conjunction with a reading of the Arabian Nights. So, in the opening moments we see a little girl reading. She is entranced and dreams of her heroine, Scheherazade, and all the characters and stories she has read about. At the end, Scheherazade appears and gives her the gift of a jewel, symbolizing the magic of the imagination, and the power of our dreams. All we need do is enter the mind of the child in all of us,” he concludes.

Hochoy also will narrate a live demonstration of the Martha Graham Technique, to live percussion accompaniment by John Hirsch.

This production opens DK’s season and marks the company’s return to the Indiana Repertory Theatre as its performance home. Scheherazade: An Arabian Nights Fantasy will be performed Oct. 14, 7 p.m.; Oct. 15-16, 8 p.m.; and Oct. 17, 2:30 p.m. Tickets are $15-$33; call the IRT Box Office, 635-5252, or go to www.dancekal.org.
