Speakeasy with Gwnneth of Lunar Event
by Danica Johnson Sep 22, 2004

Lunar Event will be playing at the Battle of the Bands finals at the Vogue on Sept. 30.

Q: How easily does the world of electronica fuse with rock?

They’re one and the same in our book. We didn’t start this band as part of the dance/DJ culture; we are a rock band with electronica influences. I think our success has proven that the barriers are cross-able. Our songs have a verse/chorus structure, with the emphasis on song-writing, not just arranging sounds. We always planned on adding more members when it felt right and necessary, and the time had definitely come.

Q: Did you ever think at the beginning that you would advance to the Battle of the Bands finals?

I thought we definitely had a better chance than in previous years. Our live show has really come together with the additional members fleshing out the sound and energy. The final round is going to be brutal this year!

Q: How have the new members affected the new and old songs?

Jon Harmon, our new guitarist, has added a crucial new element to our sound: pretty, melodic guitar lines, which bring a whole new dimension to the older songs. The new songs are much more guitar-based, naturally, with more of an emphasis on the overall feeling of the song, rather than it being about the process so much.

Q: LE’s flyer for the Battle as well as the recent art exhibition at Oranje artistically showcases your body. Most would never have the balls, so to speak, to put themselves in such a vulnerable position of display. Where does that confidence come from?

I have great parents, who taught me that my body is nothing to be ashamed of and who’ve always supported me in everything I do. I wasn’t allowed to have Barbies growing up, as my mom thought they would give me a poor self-image; however, I was raised in a feminist household that loves and appreciates men.

Q: Is there a definable point where artistic expression crosses over to pornography?

The standard definition of pornography: “a creative activity (writing or pictures or films, etc.) of no literary or artistic value other than to stimulate sexual desire.” It’s all in the eye of the beholder, correct? Many people would define my artwork as pornography; I would object, as I definitely believe in its artistic value. Yes, much of it is intended to cause some degree of sexual excitement, but it’s also meant to make the viewer think about the larger issues of sexuality, body image, body as commodity and issues of power in gender relations.

Q: Where is Lunar Event headed in the near future?

We’re working on our new album. We’re planning on touring out of state a lot more in the next year and submitting demos/press packs to labels and promotional firms. We’ve also been writing some original music for commercials, which is fun. If we can’t write a 30-second track that makes you want to put something in your mouth, then we might as well hang it up.
