Renaissance on the avenue
The second Indiana Avenue Renaissance Festival will be presented Sept. 3-12 in the Indiana Avenue Cultural District. Presented by Urban Arts of Indianapolis, WICR, Jazzline, Inc., Madame Walker Theatre Center and the Indiana Avenue Cultural District, the celebration pays tribute to the rich cultural heritage and contributions of historic Indiana Avenue to Indiana and the world of jazz.
The schedule of events includes:
• Sept. 3, 8 p.m.: Cultural Achievement Concert at the Madame Walker Theatre Center featuring the Marvin Chandler Trio and jazz pianist Roy Meriweather; $15.
• Sept. 10, 7 p.m.: Jazz on the Avenue Cabaret featuring Gregg Bacon in the Madame Walker Ballroom; $10, $7 for senior citizens
• Downtown Canal Greenway Stage (North and Senate Avenue), free: Sept. 10, 7 p.m. Blues Before Dawn, Harvey Cook and the Bluetones and the Rodney Stepp Band
• Sept. 11, Jazz on the Canal: Brenda Williams at 2 p.m., TBA at 3:30 p.m., Rob Dixion Quintet at 5 p.m., Paula Hampton & Jazzberry Jam at 6:30 p.m. and TBA at 8 p.m.
• Sept. 12, Jazz on the Canal: Kelleen & Band at 2 p.m., Monsalve-Perez Latin Jazz Project at 3:30 p.m., Oliver Nelson Jr. at 5 p.m., Seven Pleasures at 6:30 p.m. and Pookie Johnson & The Indy All Stars at 8:30 p.m.
