Modest Mouse mends Lolla loss
Axis (Bloomington)
Friday, July 30

Lollapalooza ’04 was every rock fan’s fantasy: Sonic Youth, the Flaming Lips, Wilco, Morrissey, Modest Mouse and many others all on the same stage. Then the tour disbanded, leaving many fans scrambling for time off work and extra hours in the meantime for additional tickets to see their favorite bands on separate days. And while July 29 in Chicago is your closest chance of catching Sonic Youth, if Modest Mouse is also on your list, then this Friday is your chance to see them for their only Midwest stop at Bloomington’s Axis Nightclub.
If you moshed to the Pixies and Pearl Jam 10 years ago, then Modest Mouse is a band for you. If you like the horn stylings of mid-’70s era Bowie, then Friday’s date is a show for you. For over eight years, Issaquah, Wash., rockers Issac Brock, Dan Gallucci, Eric Judy and Benjamin Weikel have belted out blue-collar lumberjack rage on guitars, piano, bass and drums, respectively. The setlist from their latest album, however, is slated towards more subdued elements and some surprises. Modest Mouse delivers these surprises in live shows, due to lack of additional studio musicians on violin and horns, who sometimes tour. With appearances from the Flaming Lips and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band on their latest album, this Friday’s show calls for exciting guesswork. While they’ll probably perform a setlist from their latest album, Modest Mouse may also throw in old classics from Interstate 8 and The Lonesome Crowded West.
