Planet Bicycle

Utopia comes to Indianapolis this Saturday. No, not the band; the condition where life is exactly the way it should be.
The annual N.I.T.E. Ride will be held on Saturday at the Major Taylor Velodrome, located just south of the intersection of 38th and Cold Spring Road. It’s the only day of the year when bicycles take over.
If you want to ride during the day, show up at 8 a.m. Routes span from 17 to 58 miles and other rides are offered during the day. Utopia comes to full fruition at 10 p.m. Show up at the Velodrome with a headlight on your bike, a bicycle helmet, a piece of I.D. — and leave the alcohol at home, dude.
At 11 p.m., N.I.T.E. Ride begins, snaking for some 20 miles throughout downtown Indianapolis. They shut down streets; they have a food and drink station along the way. You’re in a river of wheels, thousands of bicycles, and you rule. Cars, for once, take a subservient role. Cost is $25. At the end of the ride, the Velodrome features food and music, so you can extend that feeling until 2 a.m.
Check out the Central Indiana Bicycling Association (CIBA) at www.cibaride.org or call 767-7765 for more information on registration, directions and opportunities to volunteer.
