Q&A with Tim Harmon
by Editors Jul 7, 2004

Tim Harmon is the happy owner of Tim & Avi’s Salvage Store. When he’s not at work he writes, eats, publishes, creates art, reads, sees movies and sleeps. He would like to add being in love to this list. Check out his writing at www.architecturalantiques.net.

Q: What are you reading now?

A: The Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse, by Louise Erdrich. I’m a slow reader but I’m always reading a book.

Q: What do you like about the Indianapolis arts scene?

A: I love it all right now, Mass. Ave., Fountain Square, the new outdoor space at the Art Center. Everyone has worked so hard for so long now and it’s really paying off.

Q: What don’t you like?

A: Beets! But if you are asking about the art scene, it’s all good right now.

Q: What inspires you?

A: I just did nine pieces for the Shovel Show, so I’d have to say shovels, but anything salvaged. I love salvage.

Q: Drug of choice?

A: Gosh, at my age I’m pretty much over all of that, hell I even drink decaf green tea now.

Q: Who’s your favorite politician?

A: I’m not a fan of politicians. Andy Jacobs was one of the best and there were days when even he turned my stomach.

Q: What’s the hardest thing about what you do?

A: Convincing the people I buy from that their stuff is worthless and the people I’m selling to that the same stuff is priceless. But I’m good at it!

Q: What’s your favorite TV commercial at the moment?

A: The Stanley Steamer spots are very clever — Young & Laramore does a great job and they are local.

Q: Three people living or dead that you would invite to dinner?

A: Picasso, e.e. cummings and Lyle Lovett. I’d make a really good bean soup and broil some fish.

Q: Can love be pornographic?

A: Love no, good sex, yes!
