Doom metal fest to rock Birdy’s

A full lineup of regional and national doom-metal bands will be playing the festival, ranging from local favorites Devil To Pay and The Gates of Slumber to the nationally-known Debris Inc. and Place of Skulls.
“We’re honored to play Templars because it’s bringing a whole new level of great underground doom metal right into our hometown,” said Steve Janiak of Devil To Pay.
Doom metal is defined by its fans as a darker, slower, more gloomy cousin to heavy metal. Black Sabbath’s early albums are seen as the birth of doom metal and the blueprint for much of what has followed.
“When I first got into music as a kid, MTV played some snippets from one of Ozzy’s concert tours,” said Karl Simon of The Gates of Slumber, which organized the show. “They played ‘Iron Man’ and my head snapped back. I’ve been possessed with the music ever since.” He said, “Doom metal is a celebration and a cathartic release in much the same way as punk music is. If I’m feeling down, nothing gets me out of it like one of these records. By the time the record is over, your anger is gone.”
Doom metal is separated from its red-eyed cousin, stoner rock, by its “anguished sound,” Simon said. “Even in Sabbath’s brighter moments, anguish is all over the place.”
The groups booked for the event reflect both the old and new schools of doom metal. Several supergroups, comprised of legendary doom metal bands, will perform at the show. Debris Inc. features David Chandler of the influential doom metal band Saint Vitus. Place of Skulls is led by former Pentagram member Victor Griffin, who now distances himself from his former group’s evil trappings.
Also performing will be the New York group Orodruin (who Simon describes as “the bright new stars” of death metal), Pale Divine, Salt of the Earth, Negative Reaction Servile, Minsk, Lair of the Minotaur and Wretched.
The action gets underway around 7 p.m. on Friday and approximately 2 p.m. on Saturday. Two-day passes are available for $22. Visit templarsofdoom.com for more information.
