Gregory Hancock Dance Theatre will preview ‘The Hunchback of Notre Dame’ as part of their concert ‘My Gypsy Soul’ at the Indiana Roof Ballroom May 16 and 23; 846-2441.

“The program, in the round, features choreography specially designed to be dimensional and viewed from many angles,” Hancock explains. He has been researching for several years through travel, study and his own heritage. “It’s in my blood,” he said last summer when he began to build the program. “I needed to connect and share the richness that goes back to the 15th century.” His intent is to show “the rich culture and heritage given to the world by nomadic people.” He also noted that wherever Gypsies have gone some people native to that land have gone with them, making their living as traders, unattached to the soil.

The program includes a piece set to Ravel’s Bolero and previews a new work, “The Hunchback of Notre Dame,” to premiere spring 2005. “It is inspired by the Gypsy dancer, Esmerelda, and her admirer, Quasimodo,” Hancock said. The Indiana Roof Ballroom is located at 140 W. Washington St. Tickets are $25, $20 for students and senior citizens.
