Ralph Nader to speak at IUPUI
Candidate’s appearance to support Take Back Earth Day
Independent presidential candidate and legendary consumer advocate Ralph Nader will be speaking at the IUPUI campus this weekend and signing copies of his book, Crashing The Party, Saturday, April 24, beginning at 4 p.m. He’ll be speaking under the portico of the School of Public and Environmental Affairs, 801 W. Michigan St., near the University College building. Nader will also be appearing in South Bend and Bloomington over the course of the weekend. His appearance is part of Take Back the Earth Day, which runs from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on the IUPUI campus. “This is going to show people that Mr. Nader is serious,” Indiana campaign coordinator Dallas Stoner said. “Ralph has this way, when people see and hear him, of breaking that mind control that fear has on them. His coming here will give people that hope, that he’s a real person and that he’s very serious about the vote here in Indiana.” Stoner expects the event to be a flashpoint in the arduous process of getting Nader onto the presidential ballot in Indiana. So far Stoner and 150 volunteers have collected about 10 percent of the 29,552 confirmed signatures they need by June 30 to get Nader on the ballot. “We haven’t been completely invested in this thing yet, but with Ralph coming, people will get that fire again,” Stoner said. “And school’s ending in a few weeks; a lot of students are feeling the crunch. But after that we’re going to have a small army of Nader’s Raiders that are going to be able to invest a lot more of their time into doing this. And demographically, it’s varied. You’ve got a little old man in Lowell, Ind., with a card table in front of a supermarket, a veteran who’s collecting signatures for Ralph. We’ve got high school students going into their government classes. Union people walking into their union halls and telling their coworkers, ‘Nader’s not going to stab you in the back and ship your jobs to China.’” Take Back the Earth day, according to organizers, is a series of workshops, demonstrations and events designed to focus on personal and community growth, as well as to draw attention to their contention that Earth Day events the same day are overly tainted by corporate sponsorship. WHO: Ralph Nader, presidential candidate, author, consumer advocate WHAT: Speech, book signing, collecting signatures WHERE: IUPUI University College, 801 W.
