Comedy
With bawdy poems about nuns debauched by bikers, the flatulence of Packers faithful and the fires of passion that ignite between a 4-inch-tall man and a bearded lady, Paul Gilmartin, host of the TBS series “Dinner and a Movie,” is proof that wit — and maybe even hirsute women — are ready for a rally. Another of the high-octane comics who frequent the Bob and Tom radio show, Gilmartin deftly dishes absurd, often cartoonish content with a straight-faced, matter-of-fact style that’s mildly reminiscent of Bob Newhart. Even regaling the sordid fate of nuns who abandon bus loads of school children to abscond with leather-clad bikers, Gilmartin’s humor emits a sweet optimism that’s refreshingly out of step with the in-your-face “realness” of the comic status quo. Gilmartin has written for Dennis Miller and performed with Chicago’s Second City comedy troupe. He has appeared on Politically Incorrect, VH1’s The List, HBO Comedy Showcase and MTV’s Half-Hour Comedy Hour. He pulled a CableAce nomination for his work on “Dinner and a Movie.” Paul Gilmartin will be performing at Crackers, 6821 N. College Ave., March 24-28. Also appearing are Rod Paulette and Brooke Showalter. The show is rated R. Tickets range from $8 to $18; call 255-4211 for show times, reservations or more information.
