For DJs Universoul and Prophecy, DJing is an anytime, anywhere kind of lifestyle. “We spin anywhere: bedrooms, closets, house parties, raves,” Universoul said. “Anywhere. All over the state.”

DJs Prophecy and Universoul spin at Drum ’n’ Bass Night at the Melody Inn.

Prophecy (Rob Jones) and Universoul (Rick Paicely) work together in a sandwich shop by day and tag-team by night, spinning records in a broad variety of genres and venues. Universoul’s name is drawn from his mix of interests in many kinds of music, and Prophecy’s from his quick pickup of DJ skills as a beginner. “People said it was just like I was meant to do it.” Universoul and Prophecy have been working together for six years now. “We spin separately sometimes, but a whole lot together. We’re all kinds of competitive about that,” Prophecy said. “We don’t want the other one to get one up on ’em! Being around Universoul and all the other DJs has taught me a lot about timing. About listening to your track and being able to mix anything. Jungle, house, beat, whatever. There’s a science to it.” “A good tip for beginning DJs is to listen to records all the way through, listen to every note, every beat, every hit,” Universoul said. “You learn best through trial and error. It takes some time and a lot of work. But once you step into it, after a while, it’s like riding a little bike … It’s always good to get in with record shops. You need your connections, with DJs and promoters and shop owners. A lot of them are little mom-and-pop operations, and they’ll hook you up if you’re in good with them.” They’re regulars at such events as the Melody Inn’s Tuesday Drum ’n’ Bass Nights, building an audience and spreading their music. “We’re trying to rebuild the scene here,” Prophecy said. “We’d rather just get into it and see what happens rather than just sit back and wonder, what if?”
