Q&A with JoEllen Florio Rossebo
by Editors Jan 28, 2004

Two months ago, JoEllen Florio Rossebo succeeded Anna White as executive director of Young Audiences of Indiana. Young Audiences is one of 32 chapters that comprise the YA network. Here in Indiana, YA serves over 30,000 kids a year with arts education programming. “The arts are infused in my life and the life of my family,” Rossebo says. “I feel very fortunate to be leading an organization that is built on the premise that the arts are an essential part of every child’s education.”

Q: What are you reading now?

A: The Cave, Jose Saramago; The Creative Habit, Twyla Tharp; When Things Fall Apart, Pema Chodron.

Q: What do you like about the Indianapolis arts scene?

A: The amount of growth and variety is really hopeful.

Q: What don’t you like?

A: I would like to see the Indianapolis audience more supportive of creative risk-taking.

Q: What inspires you?

A: I am inspired anytime I see someone finding joy and meaning in their day to day life.

Q: Drug of choice? A: Latte grande, very hot.

Q: Who is you favorite politician?

A: This may seem safe and predictable, however I really believe that Bart Peterson’s support has affected the arts community. It has coalesced with his support.

Q: What is the hardest thing about what you do?

A: Being patient and realizing that I don’t need to have all the answers immediately.

Q: What is you favorite commercial?

A: I don’t watch many of them but I have always appreciated the softer, more intellectual approach of Volkswagen commercials.

Q: Three people you would invite to dinner?

A: Leonardo da Vinci, Andy Warhol, Claes Oldenburg, but actually three good friends would be even better.

Q: Can love be pornographic?

A: I think they are contradictory terms.
