Art vs. Art after-party
Radio Radio
Friday, Sept. 7, 10 p.m., $5 or free with admission to Art vs. Art exhibition at the Fountain Square Theatre
After the Wheel of Death has dished out fate for unlucky artists, the Art vs. Art after-party at Radio Radio starts at 10 p.m. Sept. 7 with local band Those Young Lions and Louisville’s experimental/psychedelic Wax Fang.
Scott Carney, lead singer and guitarist, says Wax Fang formed two years ago as the result of his assembling a group to play on his solo album, Black and Endless Night. Since then, they’ve opened up for the likes of My Morning Jacket and The Whigs. Carney (along with drummer Kevin Ratterman and bassist Jake Hustis) says the band has been influenced by everything from early David Bowie to Fugazi. Their first album arrives in November.
NUVO: Can you tell me a bit about how the band formed and how you found your musical voice?
Carney: It started when I was trying to rediscover myself as sort of a songwriter and find a singing voice for myself, because my previous experience up until that point was screaming instead of singing — punk bands and whatnot — and how to integrate new sorts of playing into my voice. I was trying to lay down the foundation for an imaginary band, never imagining it would become a band in reality. The influences are pretty much everything. We’ve got a broad spectrum of interest in our music.
NUVO: What’s your live show like?
Carney: The live show is definitely a lot more bombastic than the CD would lead you to believe. The guys kind of take what I’d done on the CD and kind of explode with it in a way. We try to generate as much sound as we can. We just try to throw in science-fiction special effects here and there to round it out and create space and collapse space at the same time. We’ve got some heavy hitters for sure.
NUVO: Perfect for Art vs. Art, then!
Carney: Art vs. Art sounds like it’s right up our alley. This will excite everyone. We like crazy people. They’re our kind of people.
