On Oct. 19 a rumble will shake Indianapolis. Octavius James, CEO of Chicago-based One-in-a-Million-Boxing promotions brings to Indianapolis their first boxing card. The “Circle City Rumble” features Indiana’s own Mary McGee (11-0, 6 KOs) fighting for the vacant Women’s NABC (North American Boxing Council) championship, in the main event.

She will face Tawnyah “No Fear” Freeman (8-4, 3 KOs), of Fort Smith, Arkansas. Freeman has faced some of the top female boxers in her division. The fight promises to be one of the toughest so far in McGee’s career.

“Fighting for a title is my dream come true,” she said. “Gary is my hometown, but Indy has great fans. I’ll win them over with my fighting style, because I plan to put on a show.”

McGee, 21, won two Golden Gloves titles, while competing as an amateur. Raised by her grandmother, who is a devout Jehovah’s Witness, she encountered adversity early on. In 2004 an elder from the Witnesses informed her grandmother that boxing was “illicit,” whether participating in it or watching it, as she did with her grandfather. Her grandmother told her she would have to give up boxing or leave the house. Her decision: to train in secret.

At 17 she moved out of the house and continued boxing as an amateur, before turning professional in 2005.

According to McGee, for this fight, she will be in the best shape of her career. “My whole life is boxing. I’m training six days a week. When I’m not training, I’m watching fight films. And mentally, I’m more focused than I ever have been.”

For his part, James is confident the fight will end favorably for McGee.

“We’re excited to be hosting this event in the Circle City,” he said. “The NABC should be Mary’s first title in what is sure to be a career full of titles. I’m certain that Mary will deliver nothing less than a world-class effort.”

Also on the card will be Indianapolis’s “Downtown” Louis Brown (15-3, 10 KOs) against veteran Ruben Galvan (27-11-2, 10 KOs), with Anthony “Showtime” Shuler and Frankie “Panchito” Zepeda featured in additional bouts.
