Alice Friman told us she loves firemen. There’s nothing unusual in this, but it was the way she said it that sticks to the memory — and that’s delightful.

Friman, sadly, no longer lives in these parts, having moved to Georgia. But she is still writing memorable lines: Her most recent book of poems is called The Book of the Rotten Daughter (BkMk Press, 2006) and was inspired by years spent caring for her aging parents. Friman has won a wagonload of prizes and fellowships and has eight books to her name.

She will read from her works Feb. 15 as part of the University of Indianapolis’ Kellogg Writers Series. Friman’s reading begins at 8 p.m. and is free. The reading takes place in Good Hall at 1400 E. Hanna Ave. For more information call 317-788-3373
