In celebrating “the towering icons that represent our farming heritage,” this book equally teaches us how ephemeral life-ways are. Farmers supplanted American Indians who utilized the land to hunt, forage and plant; and now industry, subdivisions and highways are eradicating arable land to the point of making us wonder if anyone in a few generations will even know what remnant grain elevators and feed mills were used for. One wants to linger over the duotone images because they do echo the calling out to pay attention that compelled the Bowers to travel Indiana in search of the structures. Equally compelling are the short explications preceding the half-dozen sections that combine to give context to the architecture and uses of grain elevators and feed mills.
