Folk Songs
Trio Mediaeval
ECM New Series 2003
Four stars

Scandinavia’s foremost vocal trio, which until now has specialized in early and contemporary works, turns to the folk music of Norway. Trio member Linn Andrea Fuglseth’s arrangements are imaginative and daring; so is the percussion of Birger Mistereggen. The mood ranges from the mysterious (“Gjendine’s lullaby”) to the rambunctious (“Dance from Vestfold”).

SOUNDS LIKE: part-time angels on a pagan holiday
