Dazzling with a lot of heart, Civic’s newest version of 42nd Street has a winning combination of outstanding cast and production elements. Tara Layne Choate lights up the role of Peggy Sawyer with the requisite list of dancing, singing, acting, innocence and determination. Gower Champion’s legendary Broadway production pulses with the beat of New York. The one-liners and the celebrated songs still work. You’ll recognize “Shuffle Off to Buffalo” and the mini-drama title song. Choreographer Michael Worcel builds upon Champion’s ability to stretch his cast’s talents, which adds to the excitement of a star-struck ingénue getting a spot in the chorus and, by a bizarre set of circumstances, landing the lead role and pulling the show through with only 36 hours of rehearsal time. The entire cast of fine dancers gives dimension to their roles. Directed by Robert J. Sorbera, 42nd Street zips along with the aid of Ryan Koharchik’s engagingly theatrical and practical stage setting. The orchestra and Deb Farmer’s music direction merit praise.
