Biking IN

Special Event

NUVO Staff

Downtown’s White River State Park will be filled with bicyclists May 20-21, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., for the inaugural Bike IN, a family-focused festival for new and experienced bike riders.

Area residents are invited to ride their bikes to the park to enjoy the festival and learn about the park’s amenities for cyclists. Most of Saturday and Sunday’s activities are free and include a bike rodeo with an outdoor course and bike safety lessons, storytelling (Saturday only), live music, walking tours of the canal, guided bike tours of the Indy Parks greenways trails, tents with fitness, bike and safety information, and a film at the Eiteljorg Museum about an Army bicycle corps comprised of African-American soldiers in the 1890s (free with paid admission to museum).

Sunday’s activities that require a pre-purchased ticket include a picnic lunch, a voucher for that afternoon’s Indianapolis Indians baseball game, an acrobatic bike-riding exhibition, an interactive circus act workshop and a unicycle stunt show by Michigan-based circus performance group SemCycle Inc. Rowdie, the Indians mascot, will lead a parade from the Bike IN tents in the park to Victory Field for the 2 p.m. game.

Tickets for the Sunday picnic may be purchased at the White River State Park Visitor’s Center and online at www.in.gov/whiteriver/ bikein. Click “order picnic package and baseball tickets.” Print and complete this document and fax to the park at 317-634-4508. The deadline to purchase tickets is Friday, May 19 at 3 p.m. Tickets are $18 for adults and $14 for children 12 and younger.
