Asinine law
I read your column from time to time and usually don’t agree with a lot of it, but I’d have to say that this past one you wrote in regards to the seat belt law is right on the money (Hammer, “Traffic Ticket Raises Questions,” May 10-17)! Since day one I have been opposed to this asinine law and all its political rhetoric. Everyone knows it’s not about being concerned with our safety. If that was the case they would be, as you said, using officers for more worthwhile efforts, and not having them lollygag about in the streets handing out tickets for not choosing to wear a restraining device.
I for one drive a pick up truck and this allows me to not wear mine if I so choose. I have no problem requiring the driver to make sure passengers under a certain age wear one, but as an adult, I should be able to consider the consequences of not wearing one and suffer whatever effects it may have if I’m in an accident.
As you so well put it, my insurance doesn’t go down due to the seat belt enforcement or increase of usage. That would make too much sense and take money from another greedy corporate entity.
I guess what I have issue with the most is when government wants to enact laws that only will have a direct impact on that individual. I realize we are becoming a dumber nation as the days pass by, but maybe if we were allowed a free will and option to make our own decisions people would wise up and our country once again would be filled with intellect and a potential for greatness.
