Commercial hemp
Do your homework
I just wanted to comment on your article “Bio Fuels” (Cover, April 12-19). I just think you didn’t do your homework very thoroughly. If your topic was bio mass, you should have included in your article the most efficient energy source possibilities. There has been lots of talk about this subject and I couldn’t believe a supposedly progressive paper like yours missed it. The topic of commercial hemp.
Commercial hemp is different than the hemp you smoke. One would choke to death before getting high on it. The DEA classifies this a drug because it does have a low THC level. However, commercial hemp is the most promising bio mass fuel out there. Commercial hemp can grow practically anywhere, doesn’t need fertilizer. It is naturally insect resistant. One acre of commercial hemp can produce 300 gallons of hemp oil. One acre of hemp saves 4.1 acres of trees. There are like 25,000 products that can be produced from commercial hemp. If grown in just 6 percent of our crops it could make us energy independent.
When the energy crop is growing it takes in CO2, releases oxygen, so when it is burned the CO2 released creates a balanced system. Global greenhouse warming and adverse climactic change will follow. Could help solve global warming. It could solve our energy needs in the future. This crop could save thousands of farmers. The economic ramifications are enormous.
Do some research on this topic on the Internet and then write an article about the importance of allowing commercial hemp growing. I am not a pro pot head trying to make a statement.
