First Tuesday talks

Issues addressed at monthly discussions

Staff Report

On Feb.7, the ACLU of Indiana launches its “First Tuesdays” series, a monthly program of free public discussions about topics in the news. NUVO and the Indiana Repertory Theatre are co-sponsoring the events, which will be held at the IRT at noon on the first Tuesday of each month.

“Every day, we at ACLU are engaged in the important social and political debates of our time, and we have discovered a real hunger in the community for a forum to discuss these topics in a rational way,” says Fran Quigley, executive director of the ACLU of Indiana.

First Tuesday discussions are free and open to the public. All are invited to bring their lunches and listen while experts from various perspectives present their views and respond to audience questioning.

The series’ first discussion, to be held from noon to 12:50 p.m. on Feb. 7 at the IRT, 140 W. Washington St., is entitled “Intelligent Design in Science Class?” Presenters are William H. Ball Jr., director of the Center for Scientific Creation, and Dr. David Stocum, dean emeritus of the IUPUI School of Science.

Subsequent “First Tuesdays” discussions will cover the domestic spying controversy, same-sex marriage and torture (see box). For more information, check www.aclu-in.org.
