The Impossible Shapes

Indianapolis, brace yourselves for what will surely be one of the more exciting shows to pass through town this autumn. Five years ago, the pages of NUVO frequently reported on local band The Impossible Shapes. Whether it was a show at the Music Box or an album release announcement for The Match Factory, every article hinted at the Shapes’ long-term potential.

Here we are a half decade later and the greatness of this Bloomington-based group is still noteworthy. Centered around founding members Aaron Deer and Chris Barth, the band has garnered praise from local press, Spin magazine, Pitchfork Media and various internationally respected publications.

Since the early months of 2005, the Shapes shifted a few band members, reevaluated their motivations, built their own studio (in a steamy hot garage) and began to work on their new, currently untitled project.

Recording their new album with a revolving cast of musicians has allowed for a more eclectic and involved Shapes experience. While some of the more well-known Shapes albums have been recorded by outsiders, their work shines when they have complete creative control (e.g. The Great Migration, Tum).
