Day of the Dead

Fountain Square will host a Day of the Dead celebration on Saturday, Oct. 29, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. The Fountain Square event, presented by Southeast Neighborhood Development, will be followed by an afternoon fiesta at the Indianapolis Art Center in the Broad Ripple Village Cultural District from 4-9 p.m. The Indianapolis Museum of Art will follow with a celebration on Sunday, Oct. 30, noon-2:30 p.m. The three organizations are collaborating to make the citywide celebration accessible to a broad audience.

The Day of the Dead, or Dia de Muertos in Spanish, is a centuries-old Mexican holiday, rooted in pre-Columbian Aztec culture. It is a unique, indigenous holiday that demonstrates a strong sense of love and respect for one’s ancestors.

Activities in Fountain Square will include performers (mariachi music and ethnic dance); traditional food vendors; hands-on cultural arts/craft activities for families; a presentation by the Mexican Consulate; and neighborhood processions.

Other Day of the Dead celebrations will take place at Crown Hill Cemetery Nov. 2, 3-7 p.m. and Oct. 29 at the Eiteljorg Museum.
