Magic formula

TV

Everybody’s looking for the magic formula to make public education successful; Hedrick Smith finds several options in the well-worth-watching Making Schools Work (9-11 p.m. today, Wednesday, WFYI Channel 20). Smith goes to schools around the country (none in Indiana) to show what’s working on the elementary, middle and high school levels to create better readers, math students and all-around learners.

Though Smith finds that there’s no single way to improve schools, the common thread in every program he highlights seems to involve instilling strict discipline and high standards. All of the schools profiled appear to have highly motivated staffs, and all deal effectively and swiftly with disruptive behavior. Oh, and not one approaches education as a way to get students to pass some standardized tests.
