MUSIC

Electronica unleashed

Show preview

The Midwest Electronic Music Summit will highlight the high-tech approach to music-making with a free event in Indianapolis Sept. 9 and 10 (Friday and Saturday) at the Murphy Art Center in Fountain Square.

MEMS — located in the Havana Room on Virginia Avenue and the Big Car Gallery upstairs — features live performances of electronic music as well as various jams, seminars and discussions. It starts at noon on Friday and Saturday and lasts until midnight both days. Big Car artists will provide video entertainment along with the music.

The lineup of more than 20 artists features several from Indianapolis, Bloomington and Lafayette — as well as others from Michigan, Ohio, Illinois and Tennessee. Each band will play a 45-minute set.

Electronic music is a broad category that includes everything from ambient to house to dance music. The musicians mainly create the music with electronic instruments like synthesizers, samplers and drum machines. Often, computers are part of that process.
