Jazz

The local jazz recording scene is very active. Look for upcoming new releases from vocalist and flautist Julie Houston with Steve Corn piano & arrangements, Mark Radway tenor and soprano sax and Jack Helsley or Fred Withrow bass. The selections cover Broadway to the American Songbook of standards.

Jan Aldridge Clark will play at the Chatterbox Thursday

Award winning clarinetist/saxophonist Frank Glover will have a very ambitious CD of his original compositions due in May. Glover informed me that there will be some tunes featuring a large string section, some with a big band and others with a small group setting. Based on Glover’s past releases, his compositions are as potent as his exceptional reed performances and we are looking forward to this release.

Pianist/composer Monika Herzig Acoustic Project will have a new release this spring titled In Your Sweet Voice, with half original tunes and half pop covers — all by women composers. Tom Clark will be on sax and flute, Frank Smith bass, Steve Davis drums and Peter Kienle guitar.

Dave Hepler, pianist, has a new CD titled Song for my Father. A solo project, Hepler composed five of the seven songs dedicated to his late trumpet-playing father.

Soulful vocalist Goldie and Exquisitely Yours will play The New Fountain Lounge, 816 W. 30th St. Thursday 9 p.m. to 1a.m. She performs Friday at The House Cafe & Music at Glendale Mall 7 to 11 p.m.

D’Vine a Wine Bar, 86th St and Keystone Ave. in the Woodfield Shopping Center, features Benito DiBartoli Thursday 8 p.m. to midnight; vocal/keyboardist Jeff DeHerdt Friday and Dave Ellman Saturday from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m.

Drummer Arthur Haan’s “Uptown Jazz Quartet” will play The Upper Room above the Broad Ripple Steakhouse, 929 E. Westfield Blvd. Friday 9 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

Jazz From Bloomington presents an all star lineup at the Waldron Arts Center Auditorium January 25 with the Marvin Stamm /Bill Mays Quartet featuring Rufus Reid and Steve Houghton. Performance is at 7:30 p.m.

Becky Archibald, pianist/composer will play a free concert Thursday at the Indianapolis Artsgarden at 12:15 p.m.

Jazz in Retrospect

Last Saturday’s much anticipated Tenor Madness at the Jazz Kitchen was a big success. In front of a capacity crowd, tenor saxophonists Rob Dixon, Frank Glover, “Pookie” Johnson and Mark Radaway, backed up with a rhythm section of Steve Jones piano, Joel Kelsey bass and Jesse Nowland drums, kept things cooking. There were varied match-ups and pairings throughout the evening. All four tenors opened and soloed on Tenor Madness but things quickly heated up when Dixon and Glover got into some intense, four bar exchanges. All four tenor men had plenty of room to stretch and develop ideas. The rhythm section of Jones, Kelsey and Nowland were a mountain of support, flowing, pushing and swinging to draw the best from all of the players. The evening’s winner was the crowd and the Jazz Kitchen. Here’s hoping this will be a regular event, featuring other instruments, as well.
