The third PRN at Bubba’s

Show review

Two Bit Terribles, Torg, Up! Scumbag, Hatesville
Bubba’s Bowling Club
Saturday, Dec. 18

This weekend was the third show for the new all-ages punk rock night and although there weren’t very many people, everyone who did show up seemed to have a good time. I was excited to see the first band, Two Bit Terribles, who were a mix of punk with a little bit of psychobilly and female vocals, and both the drummer and guitarist were from BYD, a great band who broke up within the last few months. There was a lot of movement in the front, and I went flying once or twice, but managed to only scrape my arm a little bit. Torg played next, a band from Chicago with two singers who both looked like they would be in a New York hardcore band, and I thought I heard a bit of an influence. A friend told me that they were described as “porno-punk,” and when I said I couldn’t understand them, he told me it was probably for the better. A few songs later, I finally managed to decipher one phrase: “STD.”

Up! Scumbag came on after them and played a good set — and had a good sense of humor, too. At one point, the guitarist jumped, tripped on the step in front of the stage and fell over. But instead of stopping he just got back up and kept playing. At the end of the song the bassist joked that was the most stage presence he had ever shown. Hatesville, from Cerro Gordo, Ill., finished up the show, and I barely knew they had started before they were done. They had a rough sound that I thought was great, but unfortunately, looking around, not many people seemed to notice.

The band was obviously disappointed by that and summed it up better than I can: “Thanks for coming to our practice.”
