Polly Jean Harvey is back with her best album in years, which makes this a great time for a rare club appearance in the Circle City.
The latest edition of the band PJ Harvey, in which a gritty trio backs one of rock’s all-time boldest women, appears Sunday at the Vogue with a show that has drawn raves elsewhere.
The tour supports the franchise’s sixth and latest studio album, Uh Huh Her, a visceral, stripped-down, guitar-based return to form that recalls the early ’90s glory days of Dry and Rid of Me.
Once again, Harvey taps the rich sludge of the blues to extract the most simple and ominous riffs, then she coos, moans, wails and shrieks with an abandon that carries the apocalyptic weight of Greek drama. It remains a mystery how this petite English farm girl can kick up such a cyclone of seductive menace.
With the exception of drums and some backing vocals, Harvey herself is credited with the writing, performance and production of Uh Huh Her. Not surprisingly, the themes of the day seem to be sex, violence and a vague existential pain, all delivered with cheeky wit.
