If you are looking for ways to celebrate the Fourth of July that take you beyond your own backyard and grill, here are just a few suggestions.

Glorious Fourth is July 2-5 at Conner Prairie. Get a $2 discount off each general admission ticket to the living history museum when you show your Symphony on the Prairie advance sale ticket at Conner Prairie's ticket desk. Come for the day and stay for the fireworks!

• Symphony on the Prairie: “An American Salute,” featuring the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra and a fireworks show, will be held July 1-4 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $20 advance; $25 at the gate (discounts for children); call 639-4300. Also at Conner Prairie: Glorious Fourth. Join residents of 1836 Prairietown and 1886 Liberty Corner as they celebrate our nation’s independence. Baseball games, ice cream making, sack races, watermelon seed spitting contest, live period music, storytelling and more will be featured, and food will be available for purchase. • The President Benjamin Harrison Home will celebrate independence with an Old Fashioned Ice Cream Social, including historical enactors, live music and children’s activities, July 4, 11:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Tickets are $10; $5 for students. More info: 631-1898, www.presidentbenjaminharrison.org.

• The Indianapolis Propylaeum will host An Old-Fashioned Fourth of July Celebration with patriotic ceremonies, musical entertainment, children’s flag and costume parade, an adult costume contest, sing-alongs, children’s games, face painting, Klem the Klown, Betsy Ross, voter registration and free popsicles and popcorn starting at 6 p.m. Tickets are $5; 18 and under are free with an adult. The buffet is $10, children’s dinner $3.50. Info: 638-7881.

• The Canal FamilyFest will feature Mayor Bart Peterson hosting a patriotic program paying tribute to Hoosier troops and their families at the Ohio Street Basin at 5 p.m. Plus, musical performances by Polka Boy and Cool Chilies, as well as clowns, face painting, arts activities, games and other family activities, will round out the day. Food and beverages also will be available. July 4, 4:30-8:30 p.m.; 327-5823. The evening will end with the downtown fireworks show at 9 p.m. with music from Q95 (94.7 FM); www.indydt.com.
