Remembering Dr. Frank P. Lloyd

One can be a hero in any realm; we never fail to recognize him when he appears ... he quickens the flow and the rhythm of life.

The world isn"t kept running because it"s a paying proposition. The world goes on because a few men in every generation believe in it utterly, accept it unquestioningly; they underwrite it with their lives.

Personally, he gave me my first real job in broadcasting, hiring me as a morning newscaster at WTLC. He hired my brother, a labor lawyer, to help reshape the Methodist vision for Indianapolis, and he delivered my sister, now a successful Indianapolis doctor who owns a breast imaging practice. Others have similar stories. He invested his faith in then-young people like us, no doubt hoping we would follow the trail he blazed.

The real leader has no need to lead - he is content to point the way.

Hard pressed to think of a living wayfinder of the caliber of Lloyd, we cannot let his passing find us at the end of a path. Let us follow his example, and work together to find new ways of making this city a great place for people of every hue, young and old, rich and poor. To do so would be the greatest honor we could give this man who offered so much to so many.
