The Starting Five, 1/9/2014

All politics are local - especially when it comes to snow removal. We have heard complaints about a number of primary throughfares that haven't seen a blade of late - we're wondering how many plows are out now that the warmup is underway.

The extreme cold had a cost - the number crunchers put the total at 5 billion. Nothing compared to the human toll: 21 people perished as a result of the extreme conditions.

Now that 2014's Polar Vortex is behind us, here's how it looked in the Windy City.

Oh, and remember Rush Limbaugh's comment that the polar vortex was a "hoax;" a term manufactured by the "liberal media" to gin up climate-change anxiety? NBC's Al Roker had a message for the radio host: "Stuff it."

This popped yesterday: Ain't no political vendetta like a Jersey political vendetta. Perhaps Gov. Christie's administration created some problems for Fort Lee after that city's mayor didn't endorse the Gov. This traffic issue could be the kind of thing that dogs Christie if he's planning on a White House run.
