Polar Plunge 2011
The 12th Annual Polar Plunge for Special Olympics at the White River Reservoir was a great success again. Statewide, there were more than 1,200 plungers who took the plunge and raised more than $300,000 for the Special Olympics. Plungers ran into the frigid, 34 degree water but seemed to have run even faster on their way out!

Bands, bears, and…Bollywood? Never a dull moment with the NUVO Street Team!
Tonight we (and by we, I not only mean the Street Team but about half our staff) will be at the Beta Male CD release party. If you don’t know anything about the band, check out our cover story by Paul Pogue. I’ve seen Beta Male a few times, and their shows are always entertaining and, really, pretty hot. The great thing about their show tonight is the friends they have playing with them: Pop Lolita, Slothpop, AND Andy D. That makes for quite the lineup for only $10—and you get Beta Male’s new album! I will not take snow as an excuse for this one. The show starts at 9pm at Radio Radio.
After a night out with some great local music, we’ll wake up early to jump in freezing cold water (It’s for a good cause, for a good cause, for a good cause…). The Special Olympics Polar Plunge starts at 10am where teams that have raised money for the event jump into Eagle Creek. One of the best things about the event are the costumes and the enthusiasm of the teams. From polar bear costumes to togas, you’ll see it all at this event. NUVO is still raising money so please click here if you’d like to donate to the NUVO Publishers Cheering House!
Giving us a full 24 hours to defrost, Sunday night brings us United Way’s Oscar Night. The theme this year is “A Night in Bollywood!” and actually has already sold out. So if you do not have your tickets but still would like to celebrate the Oscars, you can also join our friends at the Indy Film Fest at 45 Degrees for the Oscar party. It’s completely free and includes drink specials, appetizers, and a silent auction. The doors open for that event at 6:30pm.
I’ve only covered a few of the many great things going on in the city this weekend, so please visit nuvo.net for an extensive list or feel free to comment with other suggestions!
