Environment IndyCog lights up the city

Last Friday night, after the Cultural Vision Awards at the Athenaeum, my friends and I rode our bikes to Old Point Tavern and nabbed some prime seating, front and center at a spontaneous gathering right on the Cultural Trail. There in the shadow of Ann Dancing, Julian Opie’s electronic depiction of a dancing woman, the folks from Indycog, a local blog and community activist organization for all things bicycles. Kevin, Ben and Jamison were all there handing out free head and tail lights to any bicycler who did not have any.
That’s right, free lights.
Through Bicycle Garage Indy, who donated the lights, and with the help of Bicycle Indiana, this Indycog effort lit up the street, literally and figuratively, as a couple dozen bike riders benefited from this largesse.
Kevin Whited from Indycog said “The best part of this experience is that it took between 2 or 3 minutes to install the lights on each bike and in that time we were able to inform the riders about the current bicycle laws.” He added “The vast majority of the riders were not aware of most if not all of the laws relating to bicycling.”
Friends were made, too. As Keith reports, the Indycog-gers went up and down Mass Ave and also to the Circle, handing out close to a hundred lights in total.
From my little bubble, it looks to me like bicycles are finally beginning to find their place in the city, from the recent Pedal Indy event, to the Mayor’s Bike Ride Mayor's Bike Ride last Saturday, to this Indycog rather impromptu event.
Let’s keep it going, folks! Dust off that old bike and get it moving, cut down on traffic congestion and cycle your way to health and happiness. And if you need lights, there may be some free ones awaiting you.
