NUVO wins SPJ awards

The annual, statewide, Society of Professional Journalists award ceremony was held last Friday night at the north side Marriott, and NUVO came away with the following awards (below). Note that in some categories we competed in the non-daily publication category, while other awards were won, depending on circulation of the publication. Our congrats to all!

Coverage of Government or Politics: First place, David Hoppe, for “Mr. Carson meets Washington”

Print Feature: First place, Wayne Bertsch, for “Happy Holidays: Barfly Bingo”

Investigative Reporting: First place, Laura McPhee, for “Doug Rae’s last days?”

Sports Reporting: First place, Katy Yeiser, for “Olympic bound”; Second place, Cami Ward, Josefa Beyer and Sara Baldwin for “Little 500, big fun”

Arts/Entertainment Feature: First place, Scott Shoger, for “Mapping music’s DNA”; Second place, David Hoppe, for “Public icons”

Personality Profile: First place, David Hoppe, for “Chief of mischief”

Coverage of the Environment: First place, Dan Ferber, for “Downwind of the big dairy farm”; Second place, Steven Higgs, for “Autism and the release of chemicals”

Consumer Reporting: First place, Christina Lear and Liz Brown, for “Downtown farmers dig deep”

Social Justice Reporting: First place, Sarah Layden, for “Unite! Hotel workers fighting to unionize”; Second place, Sarah Layden, for “A different kind of change”

Education Coverage: First place, Josefa Beyer, for “A tale of two schools”
