Sports & Rec Indianapolis: A Bicycle Friendly City

No, that headline is NOT hyperbole, but now an official designation. Since 2007, the number of Hoosiers cycling to work has increased almost 40 percent. And at a celebration this afternoon, Thursday, April 22, the president of the League of American Bicyclists, Andy Clarke, came to town to drive that point home, as Indianapolis has been designated, by his organization, as a Bicycle Friendly City. Hooray!
Hopefully, all these bicycle warm and fuzzies will get you stoked to leave that costly, polluting car behind and get involved in a host of upcoming activities, starting with National Bike Month, May:
May 7, Fishers Bike to Work Day. A light breakfast will be provided at the Fishers Town Hall Municipal Complex by the Town of Fishers Parks & Recreation. Contact: Amber Mink, 317-595-3150, minka@fishers.in.us
May 21, Indianapolis Bike to Work Day: Breakfast with Mayor Ballard on Monument Circle, 6 a.m. to 10:30 a.m., Contact: Nancy Tibbett, 317-466-9701, nancy@bicycleindiana.org If this is the ONLY day you bike to work, at least give it a shot. Everyone will be sorta sweaty that day.
May 21, Carmel Bike to Work Day: Continental breakfast at the Monon Center from 6:30 a.m. to 9 a.m., City of Carmel and the Carmel Parks Department. Contact: David Littlejohn, 317-571-2417, dlittlejohn@carmel.in.gov

The 2nd Mayor’s Bike Ride is taking place on Saturday June 5. The route is primarily along the Allisonville Road bike lanes. This is a free event and you can check out the info at: www.sustainindy.org/bikeride.cfm
NITE Ride: June 26, but registration is already open for Indy’s single most fun night of bicycling. Thousands of bicyclers take to the streets on a designated route and turn this town into a utopia of wheels. See: www.niteride.org/
Looking way ahead to the coolest bicycle event of the year: the 3rd annual Mass Ave Criterion, Aug. 14. They close down the streets downtown for this race and festival. You won’t want to miss this! Keep an eye peeled on nuvo.net for updates.
Rumor/tip of the week: We heard through the proverbial bicycle grapevine that starting in June, there may be an increase in cops paying increased attention to traffic offenders, including bicyclists. That means enforcing stopping at stop signs, and for those of you who ride in bunches, you may want to adhere to the “2-by-2” rule.
