Urban cycling skills class

Posted by Laura McPhee on Mon, Mar 29, 2010 at 11:01 AM

With the addition of bike lanes throughout the city, and more on the way, new riders are taking to the streets in record numbers and warmer weather is sure to increase the bike traffic — as well as the potential for accidents with motorists.

Bicycle Indiana, Matthews Bicycles and IndyGo are teaming up on a low cost bike safety course being offered on April 10.

The Traffic Skills 101 class offers cyclists, new and experienced, the chance to gain valuable information on safe urban riding — Should cyclists ride two abreast? What should cars and cyclists do at when they meet at intersections? What cycling equipment is required? How much space should a car give a cyclist?

This day-long class is designed to give cyclists the confidence they need to ride safely and legally in traffic or on a trail. Created by the League of American Bicyclists, the course covers bicycle safety checks, fixing a flat, on-bike skills and crash-avoidance techniques. Each student receives a manual.

The fee for the class is $25 per participant, and everyone who completes the course will receive a $25 gift card from Matthews Bicycles. Bicycle Indiana members also get a $5 discount on the registration fee.

In April, the EPA may be finally ready to make a decision on whether coal is a hazardous waste. Given that we already know that emissions from coal-fired plants are toxic in nature, it's easy to imagine the answer is simple: coal ash is toxic. However, the story is more complicated than that.
