Greetings from Austin!
The town is gearing up for the onslaught of 75,000 fans and another 5,000 musicians and crews. I was lucky enough to arrive a few days early and soak up some of Austin’s pre-festival calm.
I've had the great fun of connecting with some Indianapolis expatriates. I got to hear the wonderful Stanley Smith (Strugglers) play with the Jazz Pharos on Wednesday night. Just as much fun was hearing his stories of the Indianapolis music scene in the 1960s and 1970s.
Thursday night I got to hear Aaron Stroup (Middletown, His Righteous Fold) play with singer-songwriter, Devin Preitauer play at Jovita's.
The duo covered classic tunes from Tammy Wynette to and showcased Preitauer’s original songs. Preitauer has an amazing voice — it’s hard to remember what Dolly Parton sounds like after hearing him make her songs his own.

P.J. Christie and his beautiful family (left) joined the party and provided the best dancers of the evening. Christie is wrapping up his work with SmallBox and starting his own company. Andrea Christie is loving Austin and her ceramics work is thriving. Their boys are just plain adorable.
It was fun to catch up with Cameron Smith. He is still teaching at the University of Texas and working on expanding programs in their business music school. He is also involved in music management, production and consulting. His clients include Freedy Johnston and the new band, The Hobart Brothers + Lil’ Sis Hobart (Johnston, Jon Dee Graham and Susan Cowsill). Smith is bringing Johnston to Indianapolis for a show to benefit Second Story on November 6.
Just as importantly, Smith taught me the proper way to rack the balls for a game of pool and proceeded to kick my ass in a game.
He took us to a great bar, G & S Lounge. It was chockfull of arcade games, televisions and coolers full of craft beers.
There were two dogs under the bar and a bag of dog food under the pool table. There is purportedly a surly bartender, but I’d learned from the best of them, Russel Settle, so I had no trouble.
The mirror in the bathroom freaked me out a bit — nothing like seeing an infinite number of Noras washing her hands.
All in all, a great evening.
