Gary Kurucz and Diana Roth - Submitted photo

This is part of a series of commuter essays written by transit participants.

We both went to the Commuter Connect website and signed up for car pool matching. In a very short time our match was found. We live within a few miles of each other. We met and figured out our schedule. We both drive 2 days a week and ride 2 days a week, then drive separate on Friday to allow for any personal time needed. During the past year, we have had many conversations and learned that our families have a lot in common. He is from the Columbus Ohio area, worked at Bank One (JP Morgan Chase) and has a puggle. Coincidently, Diana's daughter-in-law is from the Columbus Ohio area, worked at Bank One (JP Morgan Chase) and also has a puggle. They are both Buckeye and Browns fans!! We have both enjoyed riding together over this past year.

We have seen some strange things... like a man running down the middle of a rural road in the rain at 6:10 am. We saw a person miss a turn on Pendleton Pike near I-465 so they created their own "round-a-bout" in the middle of the intersection. Then as we were leaving work a truck started to pull out in front of us, then saw us at the last minute and then honked at us like we did something wrong! And, yes, that was all in the same day! You just can't make up stories like that and it is good to have a witness of the crazy stuff that happens out there. We filled out our Commuter Connect Inaugural Commuter Challenge and Diana won a $25 Target gift card. How cool was that?!?

Unfortunately, we are not able to car pool as of November 1 because they have temporarily changed Gary's working hours. We look forward to the day when we can get back on schedule. Hopefully his hours change back soon. The cost savings and friendship is well worth the effort, not to mention the saving of wear and tear on our vehicles and helping the environment.
