Thumbs down: Schools under the knife

The economic downturn is about to clobber Indiana school districts. A new survey of Indiana school superintendents conducted by the American Association of School Administrators indicates that one third of Indiana districts plan on laying off staff next year; 31 percent say their class sizes will increase; 36 percent will cut field trips and 29 percent will cut extracurricular activities; almost 40 percent of districts say they will reduce elective courses not required for graduation.
