Thumbs down: Skates out

Posted By on Wed, Jan 21, 2009 at 4:00 AM

The good news? The Indiana/World Skating Academy -- the nonprofit group that provides downtown with two ice skating rinks, making it possible for people to ice skate year-round -- has gotten an extension on its lease through the end of April. But the bad news is that its landlord, a California-based company called Coastal Partners, wants to charge $7,500 a month rent. When the space was controlled by the Indiana Sports Corp., rent was free. Though the academy will probably relocate to the fairgrounds, downtown will lose what has proven to be a remarkably popular amenity.
