The Indy Film Fest line up looks fantastic this year. IFF seems somehow simultaneously — over the years — to both expand and focus. By focusing, I mean that the screenings are all at the IMA, instead of spread out in the past. And the expansion? Well, check out our cover story this week and you’ll see why. The festival runs through July 24, so you’ll find all sorts of coverage in this week’s paper; we’re just now trying to plan our coverage for next.
Scott Shoger has our Black Expo music coverage handled, but one more artsy type event is the UniverSoul Circus, performing through Sunday at the Lafayette Square Mall. UniverSoul circus prides itself on being a highly interactive combo of circus arts, theater, and music that covers genres including Pop, Classic R&B, Latin, Hip Hop, Jazz and Gospel. Check ‘em out!
Microbrewed beers, the cheerily-named Opti Park, what’s not to like? The 16th annual Indiana Microbrewers festival celebrates the buy local movement featuring brewers from across Indiana and the Midwest. Head to Broad Ripple Village to experience the festivities for those of 21 years and older. Saturday, starting at 3.

Comedian Alonzo Bodden is headlining at Morty’s this Friday and Saturday. After winning the grand prize in the 3rd season of Last Comic Standing, Bodden’s career started to explode — and as a result, he began a furious regular tour of the late night talk show circuit.
Starting this weekend, the Phoenix Theatre presents the Midwest Premiere of postmodern superhero tale, With a Bang by Pete McElligott. The cast is amazing, including Karen Irwin and Ben Rose, two of my favorite local performers. Actor Matthew Van Oss (previously in Speech & Debate, End Days) describes what drew him to the script, “…It’s so fun, dirty and hilarious. Plus the fight scenes, I love fight scenes!”
It’s Family Night at the game this Friday as the Fever take on the Minnesota Lynx. Buy four tickets to Lucas Oil Family Night presented by The Indianapolis Star and you’ll receive four vouchers for free hot dogs, chips and drinks, four free t-shirts and the chance to shoot free throws on the court after the game. It’s the perfect Friday night for Hoosier families to check out our WNBA Fever!
Middle Eastern Festival of Indianapolis at St. George Orthodox Church is always a great time. I bicycle there every year. As if your Friday night options weren’t crazy enough, if you’re craving traditional Middle Eastern food like the falafel or interested in learning about the Eastern Orthodox Christian church, then you’ll be putting this at the top of your go&do list. Runs through Sunday.
Also, on Friday, the Center for Performing Arts is launching a series of free performances to herald the opening of their Tarkington Theater. First up, Dance Kaleidoscope at 7 p.m. Here’s your chance to see the new space, which will house various performance arts groups, including GHDT and Civic.
On Saturday, The New York Times best-selling author George R. R. Martin will be visiting the Circle City as a part of his US Book Tour. Martin is a screenwriter, a writer, the producer of the TV series Beauty and the Beast and a story editor for "The Twilight Zone." His acclaimed series A Song of Ice and Fire, adapted to the hit HBO series “Game of Thrones,” is considered by some to be among the best fantasy writing of all time. Most-recently he has finished his long-awaited book, A Dance with Dragon.
Finally, on Monday, there’s a Dogzplot Literature Party at Big Car, in honor of Dogzplot Online Fiction Magazine. Featuring 14 emerging Indy authors, the free event is aimed to raise funds for Second Story Indy, an organization devoted to connecting youth with literature, as well as raise awareness of Vouched Books, a small press bookstore that sponsors the event. Food and refreshments will be available from the Scratch Food Truck and Fat Sammies Ciao Wagon. Note this is the new (additional) Big Car location at Lafayette Square, a great chance to check out this amazing new space!
