Friday afternoon brought the chance to experience poetry, spirituality, and art simultaneously. (Jackpot!) Poets Joyce Brinkman, Ruthelen Burns, Joe Heithaus, and Norbert Krapf were scheduled to present “Postcards of Sacred Travel,” a reading of work based upon photographer Denis Ryan Kelly, Jr.’s exhibit, “Holy Lands, Journeys of a Pilgrim Artist.” Currently on display at the Indiana Interchurch Center (1100 W. 42nd Street), Kelly’s photographs will move to the Jewish Community Center (6701 Hoover Road) at the end of October.
I misread my directions and took 42nd Street west from Capitol Avenue instead of heading directly to 42nd and Michigan Road, right across the street from the IMA. Luckily, it added all of 35 seconds to my trip and I saw some lovely scenery that complemented Friday’s almost-autumn feeling. I walked into the building behind a busload of seniors from Robin Run Village, which made me question if I was in the right place. (I was.) I spent the time in line noticing my surroundings, including the range of religious organizations housed in the building, such as the Jewish Community Relations Council and the Episcopal Diocese of Indianapolis. I recently attended an interfaith wedding and was happy to experience two religions combining rather than clashing. It seems all I hear anymore about religion is fighting, so it was nice to be in a place where people actually appeared to get along. The day, as it turns out, would be full of peace, gratitude, inspiration for my own poems, and leave me smiling.
Check back on Friday, September 3, for the second part of this entry.
